About Pipe Fitting Bends

A pipe bend means a piece of pipe which are bent to some angle to join 2 pipings. They can be nearly any bending radius and angle. Pipe bends are commonly produced on-site to meet a specific need by cold bending or hot induction bending. A specific Pipe Fitting bend as per the standards ANSI/ASME B16.9 (or EN 10253, or other pipe fittings standards). Normally the elbows have a bending radius of 1.5D or 1D (Here the D means the nominal diameter of this bend), which are called “Short Radius elbow(SR elbow)“ or “Long Radius elbow (LR elbow)”. And the angle of an elbow is 90 degrees or 45 degrees usually, some times there are also as per custom-designed elbows which are 180 degrees, 60 degrees, 30 degrees, or other angles.
The Buttweld fitting bends should be as per the standard quality of ANSI/ASME B16.49 which did not specify the bending radius and angle, the regular pipe bend radius is 8D, 7D, 5D, 3D, or 2.5D but it will be any other bending radius according to the design need, and bending angle can be in any degree, 90, 15, 10, 5 degrees or any other. People said “All bends are elbows however all elbows do not bend”, which isn’t true. Actually “All elbows are pipe bends however not all bends are elbows” is more reasonable.
